  the fight for what is right.

  as i reviewed the events of last year, it brought me to the simple comment above.

  the thirty first of december will mark my one-year anniversary of no longer serving as an elder.

  The simple reason you are recieving so much of a reaction is that you are sitting on a keg of dynamite. When the lawsuits start flying, the vaults in Brooklyn will start emptying pretty fast. Your hitting them where it hurts the most -- the wallet! They'd better get ready to make some heavy withdraws from the Citibank accounts where all the big $$$ are....

  Personally, this issue was the last straw for me in terms of seeing just how deep the corruption has settled into the organization. How could God bless those who turn a blind eye to the wanton rape of children? Or worse beat victims seeking their help? Even to the point of violating Caesar's laws?

  I was a 3rd generation JW and have known / know lots of older ones, both at Bethel and locally, despite my young age (24 yrs old). In all fairness, at one time there were sincere men running the organization who were honestly good people and there are still pockets of decency here and there (mostly older ones). But, the worst rot is among the "young bucks" currently at the top. The money grab has become all-consuming. I honestly think all of those articles on materialism are aimed at these latest-generation Bethel higher-ups, or maybe some form of cogntive dissonance by the Writing department. They are to a person the most materialistic, greed bunch in the organization today.

  Sorry for rambling. remember Bill, to paraphrase Whitney Houston, "No matter what they take from you, they can't take away your dignity." If there is a God, he is surely with you.

  Watchtower & Awake Subscriptions

  in another thread the point was made that the wts is ending subscriptions to the watchtower and awake!

  magazines.

  isp rightly commented the following, "the wts gets double payment for the mags from the r+f......so subscribers are not cost effective!".

  One simplification that hasn't been mentioned.

  My elder father told me the Society ships their congregation literature orders to Rochester (Henrietta) assembly hall (over 100 miles away). Then, some poor local brother has to make the 4 hour drive (once a month) so the congreation can get their literature. Supposedly every congreation in the area has similar arrangements. Anyone else heard of this?

  I guess there was a retired MS who faithfully made the trip until he died. Now the congregation gets literature every 2 or 3 months. Spiritual food at the proper time, I guess. And given the cost of shipping, it probably would be cheaper for the Society to use it's own trucks.

  Since there is NO afterlife, then I would disagree. Our purpose should be to live as long as possible and have as good of a time as possible since this is IT.

  The whole notion of religion is to keep us from misbehaving. Children who disobey their parents go to their rooms; adults who disobey god go to hell. Kind of similiar if you ask me. Honestly, what is the point of "overcoming our dark side" ? We're all worm food one way or the other.

  in replying to RF's third point you said:

  "when they [your children] were young and you took them too the dentist, was it evidence of love, or hate ? perhaps god has bigger plans for us."

  That is not an EXACT metaphor for the situation. Every time I went to the dentist my mother was by my side reassuring me everything would be okay. I have never experienced a direct manifesatation of God DIRECTLY reassuing me. What loving parent could watch their child howling in pain and not even offer a simple, direct "It's okay" ?

  Well, the BEST God can do are long, ambigious texts (like the Bible and Koran) with a multitude of interpretations -- Hollow fairy tales at best, dangerous fodder for humanity's dark side at worst.

  I've seen the commercial several times. It airs on the local station at 5am. I thought it was a Mormon commercial the first 3 times I saw it.

  They are not paying for nor receiving anything for it.
  It is classified as a public announcement' and the TV station wants to
  do something for the community so are running these kinds of commercials.
  It ends with from the "Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses".

  I told the media dept. that was unusual as I would think it would say
  Watchtower Society. They told me that is now our legal name (since they
  made those changes in the legal corporation last year.)

  They plan on running more all depending on how this one is received and
  how many respond to it.. So, it would be good for us to write them and
  tell them what we think about it after we have seen it.

  I think the Dateline show will get more of a response.

  bravo! My dad just got back from his elder school. He mentioned all the same things you did.

  Except he also mentioned that it was brought out that the book studies will now be re-sized so there will be 15 publishers in each bookstudy. Maybe this is nothing new; but it WAS emphazised at his elder school (at the Henrietta ass hall).

  see, JR Brown is actually right. The Society clearly indicates a ROD is to be used, not a CORD.

  principle loan: $200,000 to congregation buy land and build hall.. interest rate: 3%.

  loan term: 30 years.. the total paid back over 30 year: $303,555.

  Right on!

  The Society even goes as far as encouraging congregations to build new instead of remodeling. I was in 2 different congregations where the congregation had older halls and the mortgage all paid off. In both cases the Circuit Overseer goaded the elder body into building a new hall and taking out hefty mortgages to the Society instead of remodeling.

  I have a question: Does anyone know where ALL of the money goes? The Kingdom Hall typically cost US $250,000 JUST FOR THE BUILDING MATERIALS (all labor is free). And these halls are not particularly ornate or much bigger than a typical single family home (which costs around $100,000 - $150,000 including labor). Anyone familiar with the construction industry knows labor is tyically the biggest expense (about the cost of the materials), but for Kingdom Halls its ALL FREE! And most of the new halls have no windows to save MONEY too!

  My dad is a Quick Build overseer, so I am privy to info about lots of halls. Seem to be lots of new halls being built. My dad has a quick build every other weekend lately. And it's not that there is any growth in the area - the new halls typically seat less than the hall they are replacing.

  Kingdom Halls are small potatoes next to the real cash cow: Assembly Halls. Oh, the stories I could tell about the one in Henrietta, NY. That was one of the BEST investments the Society ever made. Why with all the cash that went missing and "cost overruns," they turned a hefty profit BEFORE the Assembly Hall even opened its doors.

  yes, i know, the title is a pun.

  it was deliberate.. i can recall in the 1970s seeing very few overweight jws.

  in fact, i used to think (in my arrogant jw manner) that this was a sign of how jws were better at self-control than worldly people.
